Why some DALI dimming power supplies can be turned off, why some can not be turned off

Why some DALI dimming power supplies can be turned off, why some can not be turned off

2020-08-26

Let's first understand several related dimming commands of DALI dimming power supplies:

OFF Turn off the light directly

UP Adjust the brightness to 200mS according to the gradual speed "FADE RATE", and the maximum brightness will not exceed the maximum brightness "MAX LEVEL" set by the system. The light cannot be turned on when the light is off.

DOWN Dim 200mS according to the gradual speed "FADE RATE", the minimum will not exceed the minimum brightness "MIN LEVEL" set by the system, and the light cannot be turned off when it is adjusted to the lowest

STEP UP Adjust the light by one step, turn off the light, and the maximum brightness will not exceed the maximum brightness "MAX LEVEL" set by the system.

ON AND STEP UP adjust the brightness by 1 step, turn on the light directly when turning off the light, and the maximum brightness will not exceed the maximum brightness "MAX LEVEL" set by the system.

STEP DOWN dimmed by 1 step. When the brightness is the lowest, the light cannot be turned off, and the minimum brightness will not be lower than "MIN LEVEL".

STEP DOWN AND OFF Dim the light by one step, and turn off the light directly when it is adjusted to the lowest brightness "MIN LEVEL".

RECALL MAX LEVEL Turn on and set the brightness to the preset maximum brightness "MAX LEVEL"

RECALL MIN LEVEL Turn on, set the brightness to the preset minimum brightness "MIN LEVEL"

Note: MAX LEVEL generally defaults to 100% MIN LEVEL generally defaults to 0.5% or higher.

From the above commands, [DOWN] [STEP DOWN], these two commands cannot turn off the lights. It is limited by the default "MIN LEVEL" value of the system, and the minimum can only be adjusted to 0.1%. MIN LEVE users can set it in the background, and the default is 0.5% or higher.

Only the two commands [OFF] [STEP DOWN AND OFF] can turn off the light, that is, the current of the light can be set to 0%.

DALI was first applied to fluorescent lamp dimming. The lowest brightness of fluorescent lamp is generally about 10%, otherwise it will have a great impact on the life of the lamp, and if it is too low, it will not start. Therefore, DALI has a preset minimum brightness, and the brightness cannot be adjusted directly.

The life of the fluorescent lamp is calculated by the number of times the lamp is switched on and off. The more the number of times the lamp is switched on, the life will be short. Therefore, the general dimmer uses the [DOWN] command to reduce the brightness. Turn off and then use other operation methods.

The DALI power supply currently used in LED lights, we can achieve that the lights can be lit and started at 0.1%, so that the characteristics of the LED can be brightened. Of course, some LED power supplies have poor dimming performance, and can still be bright when it is less than 0.1%, and may be turned off when adjusted to 8%.

Such a dali power supply that turns off at 8% is not unusable. In the application, the lighting engineer will manually preset the "MIN LEVEL" value to be greater than 8% when debugging, so that the light will not be adjusted during the dimming process. Extinct.

According to the general idea, some customers thought that it would be better to adjust it, but it was actually a big mistake. DALI is only turned off with a dedicated command when the user needs to turn it off.

If users want to test whether the power can be turned off, they can use [OFF] [STEP DOWN AND OFF] these two commands.

Turn on the light to [ON AND STEP UP] [RECALL MAX LEVEL] [RECALL MIN LEVEL] these commands.
